Architecture as a backdrop for celebration
Status: Conceptual
Set in Bridgetown’s National Heroes Square, this temporary pavilion links the Heroes Monument with the Cenotaph & Dolphin Fountain through two intertwined forms: a timber-framed Chattel House, facing the Monument as an emblem of emancipation, and a vibrant Pride of Barbados bloom, turning toward the Cenotaph in remembrance and celebration. Inside, twin Chattel Houses host exhibitions on Barbados’s layered histories; at the far end, petals rise like a carnival headdress. The architecture itself becomes a backdrop for reflection, celebration, and photography, inviting each person to step between house and bloom, past and future, and take part in the story of our Caribbean nation and in the story of Carifesta XV in Barbados.
Built with vernacular carpentry and geometry optimized by custom gradient-modeling software, every corrugated-metal, fabric, and plywood panel is cut from flat stock, letting the classic Chattel roof unfurl into petals of national pride.
