A concept merging library and public park
Status: Conceptual
Massachusetts Institute of Technology SA+P
In response to community needs, this project proposes a library and green- space which are inextricably tied with one another. Using solid and void as a formal maneuver, a clear language is developed where void acts as green-space and solid as library space. The clarity of this language allows the green-space, void, and library, solid/poche, to maintain their own distinct spatial qualities while coexisting in one space. The green-space is open and filled with life, and beginning on the south side of the site, it becomes the shared backyard of the residential area. The library spaces, on the other hand, are heavy, intimate, and safe. Furthermore, solid and void are forever tied with one another; you cannot have void without solid and vice versa.
Public parks in urban areas have a high patrimonial value, and by tying the green-space to the library program, the proposal gains value to the community and government, and therefore becomes more economically and socially resilient.
