Research and Development
This project began with investigating the serial sections that MRI and CT scans produce as an agent to design form. Using the human cranium as the subject, material information is acquired through MRI and CT scanning and from which, geometry is derived in section. Such provides the implication to reconstruct the derived geometries three-dimensionally allowing for a dissolution of the body’s anatomical boundaries and a reconsideration of its form.Guided by an interest in how fashion can reject Asian cultural appropriation, these research interests led to the design and fabrication of a mask and bodice, which were subsequently photographed in the November 2021 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Art. The bodice, in particular, is titled the “Manipura Bodice” and is an externalization of the interior of the physical and metaphysical components of the torso- in this case bone and the manipura chakra. As such, the bodice acts as dudou like an exoskeletal armor meant to symbolize the healing of personal power.
